Apple Inc. (AAPL) iPhone5 Keyboard Shortcuts in iOS 6

Apple iPhone5Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has rolled out its super duper iPhone5. Keyboard shortcuts have always been there for Apple Inc. (AAPL) iPhone users, to make their life easier. It can’t be said that the feature is something unique to iOS, as even older phones can boast of having these shortcuts. Nonetheless, people love using keyboard shortcuts with the touch interface of an iPhone. Until recently it appeared that Apple considered the shortcuts feature to be perfect, as it remained practically unchanged in previous updates of iOS. In the recent iOS 6 update, however, keyboard shortcuts have got iCloud syncing! If you are wondering how that works, read on.

First of all, you will need to set up a few shortcuts on your Apple iPhone or iPad. This can be done by heading to the Settings app in your device and tapping the menu marked “General”. Go to the “Keyboard” section after that, and you will find the “Shortcuts” area. You can define any shortcut and its meaning easily by hitting the “Add Shortcut” button. But all this is old news, and here comes the new part.

All the shortcuts on one of your iOS devices will now sync across all iDevices you own. This means you will need to have the same iCloud account configured on all your Mac OSX and iOS 6 devices. Once that has been done, the next step is to go to your iCloud account’s settings and enable the “Document & Data” option. The shortcut syncing option falls under this area of iCloud (which makes sense), and you don’t have to perform any additional steps as long as Document & Data sharing has been toggled on.

The end result is going to be that whenever you type “omw” (or any other shortcut you have set up), it will get automatically changed to its longer form (“on my way” in this case) on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch or Mac!

The keyboard shortcut syncing feature might not be too big of a deal for many users, but it’s a neat little touch from Apple Inc. that is sure to grow on you with the passage of time.

I’ve already got short cuts set-up from ios5. They don’t work in the Messages app in ios6.

How can I get them to work without re-entering all of them?
